New York - On Thursday, October 1st, The International Peace Institute (IPI) together with the Timor-Leste Maritime Boundary Office will cohost an event to discuss the importance of the multilateral system and international law to the government of Timor-Leste, including the United Nations Convention on the Law of the Sea.

Speakers will also discuss the principle of sovereignty of a state over all its wealth, natural resources, and economic activity. This sovereignty impacts the capacity of the state to finance national development. In Timor-Leste, natural resource income is being used to build the state, construct core infrastructure, provide critical social services to the Timorese people, and support a growing and diversified economy. The event will take place at IPI on Thursday, October 1, 2015, from 10:00am to 11:30am.

“This event provides an opportunity to discuss the importance of the multilateral system and international law to the government of Timor-Leste, including the United Nations Convention on the Law of the Sea,” official statement of IPI.

Some questions to be addressed relate to the framework regarding the Timor Sea and the UN acting in the position of a state with the power to negotiate arrangements between Timor-Leste and Australia.

The moderator in this event is José Ramos-Horta, Nobel Peace Laureate; former Foreign Affairs Minister and welcome and introductions is Warren Hoge no handle, IPI Senior Adviser for External Relations.

And the speakers are Rui Maria de Araújo, Prime Minister of Timor-Leste, Kay Rala Xanana Gusmão, Minister for Planning and Strategic Investment of Timor-Leste; and former President and Prime Minister of Timor-Leste; and former Leader of the National Timorese Resistance,
Ms. Elizabeth Exposto, Maritime Boundary Office CEO, former Acting Chief of Staff to Prime Minister Gusmão.

The Maritime Boundary Office looks forward to drawing on the expertise, advice, and wisdom of other states, diplomatic actors, and members of civil society to see how best to advance this matter. (oki/*).
